Life Day 23582: USO Day

February 4, 2012 on 8:25 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning. Today’s first holiday involves something that is near and dear to my heart. Today is USO Day. I was fortunate enough to attend two USO shows in my Military career, and still have fond memories of both of them.
Additionally, today is World Cancer Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) sponsors this day every year. Ways to prevent Cancer and finding ways to raise the “quality of life” for Cancer patients seem to be recurring themes.
It is also Ice Cream For Breakfast Day. Hello last serving of Peppermint Stick Ice Cream. Prepare to be devoured.
Other holidays celebrated today are, in no particular order of importance (I’ll leave that for you to discern): Thank A Mailman/person Day, Create a Vacuum Day, Laura Ingalls Wilder Day, Liberace Day, and Quaker Day. Have as much fun with as many of these as you want.
And Finally, today is Homemade Soup Day. Can any of you say Egg Drop Soup? I think I’ll have that for dinner.

Life Day 23581: The Day The Music Died

February 3, 2012 on 8:53 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning everyone. Today is a sad day for many. It is the 53rd anniversary of The Day The Music Died. On this day in 1959, near Clear Lake, IA, a small plane crash claimed the lives of rock music legends Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. (“The Big Bopper”) Richardson. Don McLean, in his song American Pie, is credited with coining the phrase “The Day the Music Died”. Although it was certainly a tragic event, I respectfully disagree with Mr. McLean’s premise. To me, “The Day The Music Died” is subjective. Your parents or grandparents, depending upon your age, probably thought the “The Music” died when Bill Haley and the Comets song Rock Around The Clock became popular, or the day Elvis Presley first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.  However, good music continued to be written, produced, recorded, and performed even after this tragedy. In my humble opinion, “Music” thrived until the mid 1970’s when, with the advent of the “Disco Era”, “Music” just faded peacefully away into the sunset, with it’s head bowed in shame, never to be heard from again. What particular song, event, or era do you associate with The Day The Music Died?

With that said, I’ll get to the “real” holidays for today. Today is Wear Red Day. Please attire yourself appropriately if you are expecting visitors or plan to venture forth from the comfort of your humble abode lest you be subjected to public ridicule.
Additionally, today is Bubble Gum Day and Give Kids A Smile Day. I know of no better way to put a smile on a child’s face than to give him/her a piece of bubble gum (sugar-free naturally).
And finally, today is National Carrot Cake Day. I know of no better way to put a smile on my face than to give me a piece of Carrot Cake.

Life Day 23580: Groundhog Day

February 2, 2012 on 8:44 am | In Homefront | No Comments

I’m sure that many of you were glued to your TV sets this morning anxiously awaiting the news from Punxsutawney, PA about the impending advent of Spring. Yes, it is Groundhog Day once again. Punxsutawney Phil did, in fact, see his shadow this morning, which means that there will be about 6 more weeks of Winter. (If he doesn’t see his shadow, it means that Spring will arrive in about a month and a half). If you are Gaelic, you might have heard of Imbolic (or St. Brigid’s Day), which was festival celebrated mainly during the Middle Ages to mark the impending arrival of Spring. In the same genre as Groundhog Day depending on the region in which you live (in no particular order of importance) are; Marmot Day, Sled Dog Day, and Hedgehog Day. I personally place little faith in the ability of burrowing vermin to predict anything. In other words, I value their forecasts as much as I value the forecasts from the local “weather bimbos”.
If the prediction of fairer weather ahead isn’t reason enough to celebrate, here is another reason. Today is World Wetlands Day. It is a day to appreciate, preserve, and raise public awareness about the importance and value of Wetlands. There, I’ve done my part. What did you do?
If you are hungry, here are a couple of more reasons to celebrate. Today is Crepe Day and Heavenly Hash Day.  I plan on having some sweet Crepes for breakfast. I don’t know about the Heavenly Hash yet as that will involve actually getting away from my computer and actually baking something.

Life Day 23579: Freedom Day

February 1, 2012 on 9:55 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning. Today is Freedom Day. It marks the 167 anniversary of the day that Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.
It is also Working Naked Day.  Unless you are a Stripper, I think that this refers to those fortunate enough to work at home. If you do work from home and decide to celebrate this ‘holiday’, I highly recommend that you wait until after your video conference with your boss.
Additionally, it is National Baked Alaska Day. Baked Alaska requires too much effort for my liking, so I’ll just have some cookies and ice cream later.
And, last but certainly not least, today is Spunky Old Broads Day. For fear of retribution, I will not admit to knowing any “spunky old broads”, but I will admit to knowing some spirited, mature ladies.

Life Day 23578: Inspire Your Heart With Art Day

January 31, 2012 on 7:37 am | In Homefront | No Comments

Good morning art lovers. Today is Inspire Your Heart With Art Day. No friends, that “Velvet Elvis” painting, or that painting of “Dogs Playing Poker” hanging in your den do not count. Go out and support your local Museum with a visit today.
Additionally, today is Backward Day. I don’t know how to celebrate this one, but I’ll bet that this girl does. Can you pronounce your name backward? Mine is Einre Do ow.
It is also Appreciate Your Social Security Check Day. My Social security check arrives in the middle of the month, and I appreciate it every time.
And finally, it is Brandy Alexander Day. I’m not big on booze in any form, so I’ll just skip this one. If you choose to celebrate this ‘holiday’, please do so responsibly.
