Life Day 23585: Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor Day
February 7, 2012 on 9:50 am | In Homefront | No CommentsGood morning neighbors. Today is Wave All Your Fingers At Your Neighbor Day. Yes, even that one “special neighbor” down the street who normally only rates a “one-finger” wave. You know who he is. Every neighborhood has one. If you don’t know who he is, then you’re probably him. {Please note that I purposely used the male gender merely for the sake of continuity. Feel free to use the feminine gender or the plural gender if it is applicable in your particular circumstance}.
Today is also Ballet Day. How does one celebrate Ballet Day? Well, you could wear your hair in a ‘bun’, the iconic hair style of ballerinas the world over. If you are folically unencumbered (like yours truly), you could sign up for a Ballet Class, or gift a child or grandchild with some Ballet lessons. Or, just attend a Ballet performance near you.
If neither of the above inspire you, today is also Send A Card To A Friend Day. Surely, you can at least do that.
And finally, today’s ‘food holiday’ is National Fettuccine Alfredo Day. Can you say Olive Garden.
Life Day 23584: Lame Duck Day
February 6, 2012 on 8:18 am | In Homefront | No CommentsUnless you are a New York Giants fan, there is little cause for celebration today. I could only find one “holiday” for today, and it’s pretty lame. Today is Lame Duck Day. I don’t think that this day refers to a Mallard or Merganser with an injury. Rather, it refers to a person who is in a position of nearing retirement, or being “phased out” of their job, or given notice of termination for some other reason. If this pertains to you, “kick back” and have a little fun today. If, in fact, you are a duck, and have an injury, seek medical attention immediately
P.S. If you are a human who thinks that they are a duck, seek Psychiatric help immediately.
Life Day 23583: National Weatherman’s/Person’s Day
February 5, 2012 on 8:56 am | In Homefront | No CommentsGood morning everyone. Today is National Weatherman’s/Person’s Day. I expressed my opinion of local Weather People in my post a couple of days ago on Groundhog Day. I guess now we are supposed to celebrate mediocrity, because in my experience weather forecasters are only right about half the time.
Today is also California Western Monarch Day. This does not refer to the Supreme Leader in Sacramento, but rather to the Western Monarch Butterfly which makes it’s winter home in many State Parks along California’s Coast.
Additionally, today is World Nutella Day. Gee, I wonder if this “holiday” is Commercially Sponsored, steeped in long-standing tradition, or based upon the celebration of a Religious Ritual?
Finally, it is National Chocolate Fondue Day. I particularly like Strawberries and Bananas with my Chocolate Fondue. What are your favorites?
I was about to end this, but I can’t shake the feeling that I am missing something. Oh yeah, now I remember. It seems to me that there is some sort of significant sporting event occurring today. From what I can discern, it involves some sort of cauldron because I hear the term Super Bowl being bandied about. It also must involve Sesame Street because the letters X, L, V, and I as well as the numbers 4 and 6 seem to be associated with it. It is my understanding that Giant Patriots will be chasing each other around in a field trying to gain possession of an oblong piece of leather. I don’t really get it, but if you do, ENJOY!
Life Day 23582: USO Day
February 4, 2012 on 8:25 am | In Homefront | No CommentsGood morning. Today’s first holiday involves something that is near and dear to my heart. Today is USO Day. I was fortunate enough to attend two USO shows in my Military career, and still have fond memories of both of them.
Additionally, today is World Cancer Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) sponsors this day every year. Ways to prevent Cancer and finding ways to raise the “quality of life” for Cancer patients seem to be recurring themes.
It is also Ice Cream For Breakfast Day. Hello last serving of Peppermint Stick Ice Cream. Prepare to be devoured.
Other holidays celebrated today are, in no particular order of importance (I’ll leave that for you to discern): Thank A Mailman/person Day, Create a Vacuum Day, Laura Ingalls Wilder Day, Liberace Day, and Quaker Day. Have as much fun with as many of these as you want.
And Finally, today is Homemade Soup Day. Can any of you say Egg Drop Soup? I think I’ll have that for dinner.
Life Day 23581: The Day The Music Died
February 3, 2012 on 8:53 am | In Homefront | No CommentsGood morning everyone. Today is a sad day for many. It is the 53rd anniversary of The Day The Music Died. On this day in 1959, near Clear Lake, IA, a small plane crash claimed the lives of rock music legends Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and J.P. (“The Big Bopper”) Richardson. Don McLean, in his song American Pie, is credited with coining the phrase “The Day the Music Died”. Although it was certainly a tragic event, I respectfully disagree with Mr. McLean’s premise. To me, “The Day The Music Died” is subjective. Your parents or grandparents, depending upon your age, probably thought the “The Music” died when Bill Haley and the Comets song Rock Around The Clock became popular, or the day Elvis Presley first appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. However, good music continued to be written, produced, recorded, and performed even after this tragedy. In my humble opinion, “Music” thrived until the mid 1970’s when, with the advent of the “Disco Era”, “Music” just faded peacefully away into the sunset, with it’s head bowed in shame, never to be heard from again. What particular song, event, or era do you associate with The Day The Music Died?
With that said, I’ll get to the “real” holidays for today. Today is Wear Red Day. Please attire yourself appropriately if you are expecting visitors or plan to venture forth from the comfort of your humble abode lest you be subjected to public ridicule.
Additionally, today is Bubble Gum Day and Give Kids A Smile Day. I know of no better way to put a smile on a child’s face than to give him/her a piece of bubble gum (sugar-free naturally).
And finally, today is National Carrot Cake Day. I know of no better way to put a smile on my face than to give me a piece of Carrot Cake.
